Phasic Symbiosis

Phases are stages that rearrange us. The seemingly random progressions are actually the pieces of our own becoming, and it is through the surrendering of these phases that the next one can commence. In Phasic Symbiosis, you will see the dancers experience evolution, change, desperation, grief, homeostasis, and presence while oscillating between being in phase/sychronicity and out of phase/seperate existence.

Evolution, change, regression, joy, desperation, grief, hope, homeostasis, presence. Women are constantly forced to accept these rearrangements and ultimately fall in love with them. We change, grow, and continuously have to navigate different phases of life. Whether it is adolescence, to adulthood, and then menopause or our monthly cycle; phases are crucial. It is through the surrendering of these phases that the next one can commence. You will see the dancers being “in phase” or being or happening in synchrony or harmony, as well as “out of phase” or being or happening out of synchrony or harmony/ being in a different phase. How can these phases bring us together as women? How do they push us further apart? This work focuses on the emotional, physical, and biological phases in my life, the tools of creation and performance that have come into my wealth of knowledge, dynamic and qualitative preferences from the time of that phase, as well as sound inspiration. This is a culmination of who I have become, the woman I am becoming, and the gratitude for the women in my life that have helped shape it. This work was developed from my embodiment of Ballet, Modern, specifically graham, Horton, and Limon, and improvisation techniques. It also developed in a space filled with Postmodern ideals and ways of creating. It is an emotionally rich contemporary piece with a focus on personal contemplation, imaginative research, and community. This work was first presented at Marymount Manhattan College. The score consists of Nocturne by Shinya Sugimoto and Jeremey Young with Julia Kent, Namaste Alpha Sinus 102hz-109hz by OneplusOne with my own audio superimposed, and O Superman by Laurie Anderson.
